Strohsterne (German straw stars) are said to be rooted in 16th century folk traditions, brought from Europe with the German Palatines to 18th century New York, first to Claverack along the Hudson River and then west to the Mohawk Valley. These holiday decorations symbolize the Star of Bethlehem and the Christ Child lying in the manger in a bed of straw. They were inspired by an old folk tale about a poor shepherdess who wove a sparkling star to honor Jesus’ birth. These handmade decorations are woven from natural straw soaked in water to soften, and then tied with gold or red thread. They were traditionally placed in windows, hung on evergreen bouquets, advent wreaths, and Christmas trees (Weihnachtsbaume).
Chris Ferris-Hubbard, a seat weaver and chair caner for over 35 years, also weaves with wood, paper, and straw, inspired by Scandinavian, German and Danish folk art. She has shown her work and taught classes throughout the region, including Great Camp Sagamore and the Adirondack Folk School.
Revolutionary Lives is produced by the Folklife Center at Crandall Public Library to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga with a yearlong Folklife Gallery exhibition, a public access online StoryMap, and these events, with the support of generous grant funding from the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership, with additional support from the New York State Council on the Arts supported by the Governor's Office and the New York State Legislature.
