Lakeside is thrilled to welcome Rev. Dr. Jason Byassee, Senior Pastor of Timothy Eaton Memorial Church in Toronto, Ontario, as Preacher of the Week June 1-5. This week’s preacher is supported by the Hottenroth family.
Byassee will lead the 10:30 a.m. Chautauqua Community Worship Service on Sunday, June 1 in Hoover Auditorium. Michael Shirtz and the Chautauqua Choir will provide musical leadership during the service, while the liturgy will be led by Rev. Kimberly Orr, Lakeside’s Director of Religion.
Following the opening prayer, children (ages 5-11) will proceed to Bradley Temple for Children’s Church with Chip Richter. There will be a message by Richter, songs, crafts, lemonade and cookies to share. Preschoolers are welcome if accompanied by an adult.
Byassee is author or editor of 20 books on Christian faith, biblical interpretation, thriving congregations, leadership and church history. His most recent book is Northern Lights: Resurrecting Church in the North of England, with Ross Lockhart. He has also written Better than Brunch: Missional Churches in Cascadia and Surprised by Jesus Again.
His work has appeared in Christianity Today, Theology Today, Books & Culture, Sojourners and First Things. He is the editor of the nine-volume Pastoring for Life series with Baker Academic. It includes his own book with Andria Irwin, Following: Embodied Discipleship in a Digital Age.
Byassee was previously Senior Pastor of Boone United Methodist Church in Boone, North Carolina. There he directed eight other pastoral staff members, led a staff of 16 and pastored a congregation of 1,500 from five worshiping communities.
He has also served as Pastor of a small, rural congregation in North Carolina, as Interim Preacher at First Baptist Vancouver and as Preacher to the English-speaking congregation at Chinese Presbyterian in Vancouver.
Byassee is married to Jaylynn Warren Byassee, a fellow Methodist minister from the U.S. who is presently pastoring at Kingsway-Lambton United Church in Toronto. Together, they have three boys, ages 20, 19 and 16.
