Returning to Hintil

Hintil Kuu Ca began in 1973 in Oakland as a Native American child development center created to support young children and their families. Over the years, it became more than a childcare program, helping preserve and celebrate Native culture, traditions, and community, including through Pomo cultural activities and dance. Today, Hintil Kuu ca continues that legacy as an Oakland Unified School District early childhood school, serving young children while carrying forward its history of Native community and cultural connection.
Before that, during the 1969-1971 Alcatraz Island Occupation. Mothers and elders organized to teach traditional songs, stories and history pushing back against the standard school curriculum that ignored native cultures.
JOIN US for an event being held at the school grounds for dancing, songs, vendors, and food. To bring together community and educate those who don’t know, stand proudly in the culture that shaped us, and never forget the ancestors who fought, sacrificed, and paved the way for us. We carry their legacy forward not just by remembering where we come from, but by representing them with pride, purpose, and strength.
