Our final Public Talk for 2024 is a sit-down dinner, catered by the Butterfly Conservation SA Committee.
This dinner gives us a chance to celebrate the achievements of our association and the great work undertaken during 2024.
After dinner, Professor Chris Daniels, will give his presentation.
Can we bring back the platypus? If so how?
Last recorded in the River Torrens /Karrawirra Parri in the 1880s The platypuses' extinction correlated with the destruction of the Torrens. However, since the 1970s and particularly over the past 2 decades, the Torrens has been rejuvenated. This talk discusses the fall and rise of the River Torrens and the program to rewild Platypus.
Professor Chris Daniels, Chair of the Green Adelaide Landscape Board, and member of 30 other Environmental Boards and committees, is no stranger to Butterfly Conservation SA. In 2012 he launched our website, as Director of the Cleland Wildlife Park, he formed a relationship with our organisation during the project to create a butterfly house at Cleland. He is still one of our constant and valued supporters.
Christopher has been an incredible force in popularising citizen science in Australia. A former university academic and now government scientist, he has presented on ABC Radio for two decades. Starting with fortnightly backyard wildlife segments in 2003 and since 2007, he's presented community programs on urban environmental science.
Christopher was a driving force behind Adelaide becoming a National Park City and spearheads efforts to connect South Australians with nature.
He also uses the arts to promote conservation. Christopher has written 11 books including a children’s book, Koala, produced a musical theatre show on koalas, delivered comedy for the Adelaide Fringe with South Australia’s Science Media Centre, and advocates for numerous South Australian nature authors.
Now chair of the ‘Koala Life’ foundation and the Green Adelaide Landscape Board, Christopher received a Doctor of Sciences from Adelaide University in 2019. He holds adjunct professorships at the University of South Australia and University of Adelaide.
This talk covers the whole of the River Torrens eco-system so is a perfect follow-on from the free, October talk by Sam Phillips, about Breakout Creek and the lower part of the River Torrens.
