Workshop Tutor :: Sam Oster
From Sam
"When I was a student doing my photography major at University (Bachelor of Visual Arts), I was very idealistic about 'pure' photography.
I thought studio lighting was fake and didn't want anything to do with it.
Trying to make a living as a working photographer, I quickly realised how wrong I was. I am now a lighting convert, and have spent decades learning and applying controlled lighting in both studio and environmental shoots.
As a stills photographer in film & television, I observed how lighting could craft a mood, tell a story, and describe the subject and its relationship to 3-dimensional space.
For the past 30 years I have worked both commercially and creatively, working in the performing arts as well as commercial photography.
Along the way I've also taught photography (Tafe SA, University of South Australia, Centre for Creative Photography).
I value the journey of discovery that both teaching and learning offer, and I get inspired working with others to explore the photographic image.
Alongside my freelance work I also run a studio space. I often see how people who hire the studios struggle with lighting and it reminds me to value my hard-earned relationship with light - I want to inspire and educate others to take control of light and start using it confidently in their work".
