Join us for an evening of live, true stories told by Brattleboro-area community members as part of Retreat Farm’s America at 250 series.
This event is presented by Transom Story Lab, a nonprofit organization nationally known for training journalists and community members in the art of first-person storytelling for radio, podcasts, and live audiences. For more than 25 years, Transom has helped people turn lived experience into thoughtful, human stories that foster empathy and connection.
In the days leading up to the performance, storytellers will take part in an intensive workshop (March 7–9) led by seasoned trainers — including the Director of The Moth — and supported by Transom’s senior teaching team.
On March 11, in an event hosted by Jill Lepore, those storytellers will share short, personal stories reflecting on what it means to be American today, exploring identity, belonging, responsibility, and hope through everyday experience. Doors at 6pm, show at 7pm.

Selected participants will take part in a three-day storytelling workshop (March 7–9) led by seasoned, nationally recognized trainers along with Transom’s senior storytelling coaches. The workshop will culminate in the live storytelling performance at Retreat Farm on the evening of March 11.
Transom is a nonprofit organization that specializes in helping people shape and share true, first-person stories with care, clarity, and heart. As part of Retreat Farm’s America at 250 series, we’re seeking personal stories that reflect on national identity and shared values through lived experience.
You do not need to be a professional writer or performer. We’re especially eager to hear from people whose voices and experiences are not always heard on stage. Selected storytellers will receive supportive coaching and will share a 5–7 minute true story in a welcoming, community-centered live event.
This event is supported in part by Brooks Memorial Library, Down Right Productions, and the generosity of Retreat Farm donors. Thank you!
