Renowned National Geographic Explorer Dr. Roland Kays just returned from his expedition across the U.S. leading a team of biologists to re-survey wildlife along the same route Lewis and Clark pioneered 220 years ago. He partnered with the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute and local experts across the country to re-survey the wildlife on this route. South Wake Conservationists are honored to have Dr. Kays and Matt Jones, Head of Digital Media at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, give us a very special, first-hand account of this expedition, Return of the Wild, and how his findings compare with what Lewis and Clark recorded in their original journal in 1804-1806.
Using camera traps in coordination with biologists all across the continent, as well as direct observation from canoes, kayaks, and tromping through wetlands, forests, and prairies, we will enjoy some of the beautiful video footage from this expedition, together with first-hand stories and facts from this incredible adventure. This will also be a sneak peek at some of the wonderful videography that will be included as part of a full documentary they are producing for national media outlets this summer.
Dr. Kays is the Biodiversity Research Lab Director for the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and is also an NC State University Research Scientist. He is a recognized expert in using technology to study free-ranging animals, especially to track their movement with GPS tags and camera traps. Combining this high-tech work with traditional methods, he also collects data through field work around the world and studies of museum collections.
He regularly shares stories and videos from across North America and the world on his Wild Animals YouTube channel using thousands of trail cameras to study animal behavior, movement, and ecology. This channel presents surprising footage from the field, the science behind what you’re watching, and stories about the animals living wild in forests, suburbs, and everywhere in between. He also hosts the NC Museum of Natural Sciences’ Wild Animals Podcast.
Come to Bass Lake Park for a wild time, exciting wildlife tales with video footage, refreshments, and a chance to meet Dr. Roland Kays and Matt Jones in person!
