About this Event
Minneapolis Club Speaker Series: Restoring Culture & Environment at Owámniyomni (Owámniyomni ed Dako wićoh’aŋ makoće kiŋ wóyutećapi)
WED JAN 14 | 11:30AM-1PM | THE MINNEAPOLIS CLUB
Owámniyomni Okhódayapi is transforming Minneapolis’ most iconic riverfront location - St. Anthony Falls - from a desecrated industrial site into a living monument that says, “This is Dakota land.” The Owámniyomni project will restore native plantings, uplift Dakota land management and cultural practices and rebuild connections to the water. This groundbreaking land reclamation project implements the vision of the four Dakota Nations in Mní Sóta at no cost to the Tribes.
Minneapolis Club member Jay Cowles will lead a conversation with Shelley Buck, OwámniyomniOkhódayapi president, David Malda, principal landscape architect at GGN, and Dakota Knowledge Keepers about the upcoming land transformation, what it means to treat the land as a relative rather than a resource, and how communities can heal.
Owámniyomni Okhódayapi (OO) is a Dakota-led non-profit creating a future where Dakota values – such as mni wičóni, or water is life – are embedded into our communal existence. OO is currently working to transform five acres of land at Owámniyomni (St. Anthony Falls) into a place of restoration, education, healing and connection.
A plated lunch will be served. This event is open to the public.
