Respiratory Disease and Ventilatory Support Modes

Daisy Marty, M.D. is a third year Neonatal-Perinatal Fellow at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, as well as a Pediatric Hospitalist at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Franciscan Health Olympia Fields in Oak Lawn, and a NICU Hospitalist at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. She has presented at numerous national conferences and has a special interest in neonatal sepsis, decreased length of stay, and inflammatory markers. Dr. Mary is also actively involved in quality improvement projects.

About This Program: Respiratory disease and respiratory failure are frequent and important clinical conditions affecting both preterm and full term newborns. Nurses, respiratory therapists, and physicians are responsible for the ongoing assessment and care of infants requiring supportive care, including advanced mechanical ventilation, due to an array of respiratory diseases. Numerous types of equipment, ventilators, and modes are used in the delivery room, the special care nursery and neonatal ICU. Many of these can be intimidating, especially with limited experience for caring for newborns with lung disease and the various types of ventilators. This program will provide a pathophysiology overview of respiratory diseases and management in the newborn, including mechanical ventilation, with a focus on common modalities, and ventilation-related nursing interventions.

Program Outcome: After this educational activity, the learner will: define respiratory disease in the neonate, describe its pathophysiology and management, and identify neonatal ventilator support modes.

This activity is being offered for a total of 1.3 contact hours for nursing.

Criteria for successful completion and receipt of contact hours for this educational activity include:

4. Attend the entire presentation. Attendance will be taken at beginning and end of program.
