St. Mark's Music Director Michael McNeill presents an afternoon of solo piano music music evoking the dream world and its resonances in waking life. Anchoring the program is Dorothy Rudd Moore's "Dream and Variations" (1974), a work of rugged, mid-20th-century American modernism that explores "a land of dreams which range from euphoric bliss to nightmarish disturbance". McNeill will also play several of his own works highlighting the ethereal resonances of the piano. Bookending these will be Alexander Scriabin's Eight Etudes, op. 42 (1903), works of sumptuous late Romanticism that hint at the dramatic developments of the coming decade.$20 suggested donation; no one turned away for lack of funds.
Michael McNeill is a pianist, improviser, and composer from Western New York. He performs in jazz settings with John Bacon, Griff Kazmierczak, Dave Phillips, and the Buffalo Jazz Composers Workshop, and in chamber music settings with Tediyra Barton-Harris, Evan Courtin, Megan Kyle, Katie Weissman, and others. In 2024 Infrasonic Press released his album Barcode Poetry, featuring the late pedal-steel guitar innovator Susan Alcorn. McNeill is music director at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Orchard Park and teaches at SUNY Niagara and the Community Music School of Buffalo.
