Abstract
Understanding the mechanisms that drive student learning is central to effective teaching in higher education. Instructors frequently confront challenges related to student engagement, motivation, heterogeneity in prior knowledge and abilities, and the quality of student interaction in the classroom. Drawing on insights from cognitive science and the scholarship of teaching and learning, this talk examines key drivers of learning and their implications for instructional design and classroom practice. The discussion highlights how cognitive processes such as attention, memory, and motivation interact with pedagogical strategies to influence learning outcomes. Particular attention is given to how instructors can structure learning environments that accommodate diverse learners while fostering meaningful engagement and interaction. By integrating evidence from cognitive science with practical teaching strategies, the session aims to provide a framework for designing more effective and inclusive learning experiences in higher education.
