About this Event
Opening the program, Anne Boyd's Goldfish Through Summer Rain invites us to ground ourselves in our bodies through its meditative sonorities. George Crumb's iconic work Vox Balaenae, inspired by the singing of a humpback whale, puts our existence into context against the backdrop of powerful forces of nature across prehistoric timelines.
The central focus of the program are the premieres of Ursula Kwong-Brown's Requiem for the Living and Where the I Comes From and for voice, cello, and piano. In Requiem for the Living, Kwong-Brown draws inspiration from her own grief to reconsider the nature of ritual, memorial, and memory, constructing a highly personal reconceptualization of the traditional Requiem form. Where the I Comes From sets an apocalyptic poem by Josh Bell, hoping to acknowledge our darkest impulses in order to find a path to greater kindness and compassion.
