Just Off Broadway is seeking a diverse, high-energy cast for our upcoming production of the 30th Anniversary of the groundbreaking rock musical RENT. We invite ALL PERFORMERS 16 yo and older to audition for this Pulitzer Prize-winning story about falling in love, finding your voice, and living for today.
If under 18yo, you will need parent/guardian permissions.

PREPARE:
16 bars of a modern Broadway song in the style of the show that best showcases you as a performer. Please bring sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. No a cappella auditions. Please prepare a 1-minute contemporary monologue (comedic or dramatic). You may be asked to read sides from the libretto. Dress appropriately for a movement audition.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:
MARK COHEN. The Filmmaker. A struggling documentarian and the show’s narrator. He is a bit of an outsider, watching life through a lens to avoid living it. Intellectual, neurotic, loyal, and observant. Vocal Range: Tenor/Baritone (A2-G4).
ROGER DAVIS. The Musician. A songwriter living with HIV. He is brooding and guarded, haunted by the death of his girlfriend and desperate to write on “last great song” before he dies. Intense, vulnerable, and slightly nihilistic. Vocal Range: Rock Tenor (B2-A4).
MIMI MARQUEZ. The Dancer. An exotic dancer at the Cat Scratch Club living with HIV and struggling with addiction. She is a “wild child” who uses her light to hide her internal darkness. Magnetic, fragile, and resilient. Must be a strong dancer/mover. Vocal Range: Alto/Mezzo-Soprano (Eb3-E5).
TOM COLLINS. The Philosopher. An anarchist professor and computer genius living with HIV. He is the “soul” of the group, returning to New York after being expelled from MIT. Warm, brilliant, and deeply loving. Vocal Range: Low Baritone/Bass (F#2-A4). This character is a member of the LGBTQ+ community. If you are auditioning for this role, you should be comfortable with same sex physical intimacy.
ANGEL DUMOTT SCHUNARD. The Street Performer. A drag queen and street musician living with HIV. Angel is the heart of the show – generous, vibrant, and incredibly brave. Joyful, compassionate, and flamboyant. Must be comfortable performing in heels and have strong dance ability. Vocal Range: High Tenor/Baritone with Falsetto (C3-A4). This character is a member of the LGBTQ+ community. If you are auditioning for this role, you should be comfortable with same sex physical intimacy.
MAUREEN JOHNSON. The Performance Artist. Mark’s ex-girlfriend and JoAnne’s current girlfriend. She is a bold, flirtatious, and demanding diva who uses her art to protest injustice. Chaotic, charismatic, and attention-seeking. Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano. Huge rock belt required. (C4-F5). This character is a member of the LGBTQ+ community. If you are auditioning for this role, you should be comfortable with same sex physical intimacy.
JOANNE JEFFERSON. The Lawyer. A public interest lawyer and Ivy League graduate. She comes from a wealthy background and struggles to navigate her relationship with the unpredictable Maureen. Disciplined, smart, and easily frustrated. Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano/Soprano. Powerful blues/gospel belt. (G3-E5). This character is a member of the LGBTQ+ community. If you are auditioning for this role, you should be comfortable with same sex physical intimacy.
BENJAMIN “BENNY” COFFIN III. The Landlord. A former roommate of Mark and Roger who married into a wealthy family. He has “sold out” to the corporate world and is now their landlord. Ambitious, slick, and conflicted. Vocal Range: Baritone (Bb2-F#4).
ENSEMBLE. Seeking a versatile group to play multiple roles, including:
-MRS. COHEN. Mark’s stereotypical, overbearing Jewish mother.
-ALEXI DARLING. The cutthroat producer of “Tabloid TV.”
-THE SUPPORT GROUP. (Steve, Gordon, Paul, etc.) People living with HIV/AIDS.
-SQUEEGEE MAN, HOMLESS INHABITANTS OF TENT CITY, and COPS.
