Ready to take your journey of Discovery? Renaissance: Journeys of Discovery at BRLSI is a year-long programme of talks and events exploring the many joys, revelations and something of the broader cultural legacy of a movement still making waves in the 21st century. Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Martin Luther, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Chaucer, Machiavelli, Hieronymus Bosch… if you love culture then you’ll love our new talks series!
But what did the world look like in the Renaissance? The American Museum & Gardens in Bath is home to a remarkable world-class collection of printed Renaissance maps. It was amassed by American Museum founder, Dallas Pratt, and includes rare and unique examples, rivalling those held by major libraries and museums around the world.
Pratt began collecting printed maps of the world as a student and quickly developed a passion for acquiring examples that illustrated Europeans understanding of the world around them.
Chief Curator, Kate Hebert, tells the story of the creation of this outstanding collection and shares some of the star pieces, exploring how they shaped our understanding of the world.
To learn more about the Renaissance and our exciting year long programme, don’t forget to follow our Renaissance: Journeys of Discovery webpage: https://www.brlsi.org/renaissance/
Kate Hebert is the Chief Curator at the American Museum and Gardens, where she has worked for over 20 years. Her responsibilities include the care and presentation of over 12,000 collection items of American decorative arts within a Grade-1 listed building. Star collections at the American Museum include the quilt, folk art, Shaker and Renaissance map collections.
