Remembering Orion Sawchuk

Our beloved Orion has passed away on Monday, August 10th 2026
Please join us as we celebrate his life, share stories, photos and music, and share in our collective grief
I would reallly love to have a potluck in the afternoon. I would love some help with some of the basic planning involved with that, like bringing paper plates and cups and garbage bags etc. It would be nice to label allergens in dishes as well, if possible. Food really helps with grief and it gives us something to do with our hands.
I will arrange to bring some speakers and have some folks play some chill music. I'm not sure how much time we will have (and spoons etc) but there might be time and space for open decks typa situation near the end as long as the music stays kinda chill and oriented towards that side of his tastes)
I have chosen Mount Doug (Pkols) beach park as the space to hold the event for multiple reasons, I feel the speakers could be pointed out towards the ocean to bother less people, and also it was a spot Christian and I went with Orion many times and we have many shared memories there.
The space is accessible up top - there is an option for folks to go down to the beach below if they want to but I think its best to set up the event up top, there are picnic tables and it's relatively flat and accessible there. Both the 27 and the 28 buses go by it, and I would really like to encourage folks to carpool if possible.
If anybody has lights or a propane fire, it might make it easier to continue the gathering later. Mats, rugs, blankets, flow toys, snacks.
At this time I don't have a structured event planned, but if folks are wanting some structure we could make it happen. It's doable to have some time without music to speak about him if folks want, I encourage you to leave comments in this event regarding thoughts about that, as well as about carpooling.
I would also like to encourage folks to share photos and videos they might have in this event, just so it makes it easier for everyone to access. Everyone is welcome to bring items or photos that might feel important or relevant, as well. The event is open to everyone, as Orion was so special, he touched the lives of most people he met, sometimes even just once.
We're all in this together, friends, and none of us should be alone in this tragedy. Please never hesitate to reach out if you're struggling, and you're welcome even if you didn't feel close or like you knew him well. it's about whatever you need to pay respects.
