Relay for Life events are community-driven fundraisers organized by the American Cancer Society to support cancer research, honor survivors, and remember those we've lost.
Here's what typically takes place:
Opening Ceremony:
Kicks off the event with a welcome message, national anthem, and stories from survivors or caregivers. Sets the tone and purpose of the event: hope, remembrance, and action.
Survivor Lap:
Cancer survivors take the first lap around the track while the crowd cheers them on—it's a powerful and emotional moment.
Caregiver Lap:
Caregivers join the survivors for the next lap, honoring their strength and support.
Team Relay:
Teams take turns walking or running laps for the duration of the event—symbolizing the ongoing fight against cancer. Often lasts several hours!
Luminaria Ceremony (after dark):
A deeply moving part of the event where lights are lit inside personalized bags to honor survivors and remember those lost to cancer. The track is often lined with these glowing bags, creating a path of light and remembrance.
***Entertainment & Activities:
Local performers, music, games, contests, vendors, food, and themed laps (this year is 80s themed).
Closing Ceremony:
Wraps up the event with words of gratitude and a final message of hope and commitment to continue the fight.
