About this Event
Relationships Beyond The Studio
Artist Stuart Langley and Daniel Brobbel of Artistic Solutions have been collaborating for 10 years to bring ambitious projects to life. Through their collaboration they have mixed technical, practical and real world knowledge with sky level ambition. The imagination has allowed for a series of playful and immersive works to be realised.
Join us as we explore how Stuart and Daniels have realised projects including Every Day Horror Story (ghost train transit system and effects) 2021 and Beating Heart Leeds, Middlesbrough (custom DMX lighting system installation) 2017, 2021-23.
This is a free event as part of the Turner on Tees wrap around activities which are taking place across the Tees Valley, commissioned in collaboration with MIMA and programmed by Penny Payne & Will Hughes
Stuart Langley
Stuart Langley is a multidisciplinary artist concerned with the common visual languages of light and design and how they shape everyday experience. Drawing on his graphic design background, his practice transforms familiar objects through colour, humour and spectacle, while reflecting our collective battle with fear and anxiety.
Inspired by the escapism of 1980s fantasy films and the irreverent, punk sensibilities of David Hoyle and John Waters, Langley embraces humour, theatricality and the absurd as ways of disrupting the ordinary.
Langley first presented Stained Glass Cars at Lumiere Durham in 2013. His work has since appeared internationally at festivals including i Light Singapore, Nuit Blanche Brussels and Klanglicht in Graz. Collaboration is vital to his public work, particularly his partnership with Artistic Solutions, whose technical expertise helps realise ambitious installations.
More recently, Langley has explored consumption, waste and graphic pollution. Polishing Turds, exhibited at OVERGROUND in Fukuoka, and work developed during a residency at Tamayura Chinkan in Mojiko, Japan, consider our constant consumption of visual information.
Across his practice, Langley transforms familiar visual language into playful and unexpected experiences.
About collab with Artistic Solutions
How do you install a beating heart into a high rise building with a street level participant activated heart beat trigger? How does a single sofa work as a ride vehicle for a ghost train?
These and many more questions have formed the basis of a decade-long collaboration between Daniel Brobbel of Artistic Solutions and artist Stuart Langley.
Mixing technical, practical and real world knowledge with sky level ambition and imagination has allowed for a series of playful and immersive works to be realised, including:
