- PT-focused anatomy review and how to communicate imaging findings to patients.
- ICF checklist for better history taking and more holistic, personalized treatment. Plus, we’ll focus on the highly evidenced use of biopsychosocial approaches.
- Latest EBP review / demos for shoulder pain with muscle power and mobility deficits.
- Ample hands-on lab practice with instructor guidance and feedback.
Research suggests that the prognosis for shoulder pain patients in rehab (injury and/or persistent pain) is highly influenced by the therapeutic / working alliance with their physical therapist.
This introductory/intermediate level course provides clinicians with an overview of evidence-based examination, differential diagnosis, and treatment of shoulder impairments. There will be an emphasis on classifying patients in accordance with the World Health Organization’s international Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF).
Current conservative, surgical, and post-surgical interventions will be discussed for each of the shoulder impairment classifications. The material will be presented in a lecture and lab format so that participants will learn underlying knowledge, concepts, and treatment approaches and will have an opportunity to practice the skills of examination techniques and treatment interventions in a supervised setting.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Describe the Biopsychosocial Model of Health and how it applies to the orthopedic shoulder population.
2. Demonstrate examination techniques for patients with shoulder injuries.
3. Describe the clinical decision to rule in/out the diagnosis, differentially diagnose and screen for medical complications that may present as shoulder pain.
4. Select interventions for patients with shoulder injuries for each of the described impairment classifications to appropriately incorporate them into practice.
5. Select interventions for patients with persistent shoulder pain to appropriately incorporate them into practice.
