Event description
Land-based skills sit across a wide range of sectors, organisations and routes into work: agriculture and horticulture, forestry and arboriculture, conservation and environmental management, landscaping, food growing, practical land management and more.
These skills are supported by colleges and training providers, employers, sector bodies, local and regional government, careers and employability organisations, community groups and specialist land-based networks. In many places, strong work is already happening, but the connections between these different parts of the system are not always clear or easy to navigate.
This roundtable is part of a wider project exploring how regional land-based skills ecosystems can be better understood, connected and supported.
What we’ll explore
The session will bring together people from across the regional skills and land-based landscape to discuss:
- what land-based skills provision and pathways already exist across the region;
- what is working particularly well and should be strengthened or protected;
- where learners, employers and providers experience barriers;
- where there may be gaps in provision, progression or coordination;
- how land-based skills are reflected in wider regional skills policy and planning;
- what evidence or policy change could help;
- where Lantra could add value alongside existing organisations and activity.
The session will be participatory, with a mix of discussion, mapping and small-group work. It is intended as a space to compare perspectives, add to the evidence gathered so far and identify the questions that matter most for the region.
Who should attend
We are particularly keen to involve people working across:
- land-based colleges, training providers and education;
- farming, forestry, horticulture, conservation and other land-based employers;
- employer and sector bodies;
- LSIPs, Chambers of Commerce and regional skills partnerships;
- local and regional government;
- careers, employability and youth organisations;
- community and practitioner-led organisations;
- organisations supporting new entrants and progression into land-based work.
We are aiming for a deliberately mixed group of around 20 participants, so that the discussion reflects different parts of the regional ecosystem.
What happens afterwards
The discussion will feed into a working regional evidence report and into wider learning across Devon, Yorkshire, Brighton and Sussex, and Mid Wales / Powys.
The aim is to build a clearer picture of what regional land-based skills systems need, and where stronger connections, evidence, support or policy change could make the greatest difference.
