About this Event

Join us for a screening of two recorded events, brought to us by the British Library's Living Knowledge Network, to celebrate Black History Month 2024!

2-3.15pm: The Pioneers: Trailblazers of British Reggae

The UK reggae market has always been a central pillar of the global reggae scene. No sooner had the Windrush generation had brought their vibes and culture to these shores, a new generation emerged, creating a UK-born industry, building their own sound and rules, and carving out their own place.

This panel, hosted by BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Seani B presents and salutes some of the originators of that scene – the ones who helped make British reggae such a unique and enduring phenomenon.

With artist and producer Carroll Thompson, producer and label owner, Mad Professor, Sound System Manager and Producer, Mi-Kee Koos and DJ and broadcaster Daddy Ernie.
3.30-5pm: Reggae Revolutionaries

Over the last fifty years, the UK has contributed significantly to expanding the genre of reggae. Join three of the UK’s foremost reggae revolutionaries in conversation for one night only: Linton Kwesi Johnson, who created reggae poetry, and musicians/producers Dennis Bovell and John Kpiaye, pioneers of ‘lovers’ rock’ - a very British sound. These artists have also performed together over forty decades, taking LKJ’s words and music to global audiences, with many a tale to tell about their experiences along the way. An unforgettable evening of words and music, chaired by scholar and music historian Paul Gilroy.
Free and all welcome; book your place or just come along on the day!

This event takes place in the Conference Room of Cambridge Central Library (3rd floor), which is wheelchair accessible. There is a baby change and a disabled toilet on site. For full details of Central's facilities, please visit our website.
