Regency Edinburgh
Using archive material which documents aspects of Edinburgh during the late 1700s and early 1800s, we’ll consider the influence of the Prince Regent, later George IV and his famous visit to the city orchestrated by Walter Scott in 1822 - which became a Tartan Extravaganza! For the well-to-do classes in the New Town, regency style buildings with classical simplicity and elegance were built; places such as The Assembly Rooms were designed to attract a fashionable elite. Architecture, contemporary literature and Neo-classical fashions were shifting. Jackie Sangster is a Learning Manager within the Learning & Inclusion team at Historic Environment Scotland; working across Scotland to bring people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to discover, explore, understand and be inspired by our historic environment. Mostly Jackie works with digital records from the HES archives. She visits lifelong learners doing outreach with community groups, older people, reminiscence workshops and archives-based sessions for the dementia community. As a former teacher, she endeavours to make such engagement as creative as possible, to allow people to explore heritage in a meaningful and enjoyable way.
