About this Event

Parenting Refugee Children in Ireland: Support Healing, Resilience and Mental Wellbeing

Parenting in a new country can be both rewarding and challenging, particularly for families who have experienced displacement, conflict, forced migration, or prolonged uncertainty. Refugee children often carry the emotional impact of these experiences, which can affect their mental health, behaviour, relationships, and ability to thrive at home and in school. At the same time, parents and caregivers may be navigating their own experiences of loss, trauma, and the pressures of adapting to a new society.

The Trinity Centre for Forced Migration Studies (TCFMS), in partnership with RefuMind Ireland, invites you to a three-hour interactive community session exploring the relationship between parenting, psychological trauma, and the mental wellbeing of refugee children in Ireland. This event will bring together refugee families, parents, community members, researchers, educators, mental health professionals, students, and service providers to share knowledge, lived experiences, and practical strategies for supporting children and strengthening family resilience.

Participants will learn about the impact of trauma on child development and behaviour, recognise signs of emotional distress, and explore non-clinical, culturally responsive approaches that promote healing, positive parenting, and family wellbeing. Through expert presentations, lived experience discussions, and open dialogue, the event aims to foster understanding, strengthen community connections, and encourage collaborative approaches to supporting refugee children and their families.

Whether you are a parent, practitioner, researcher, student, policymaker, or simply interested in refugee wellbeing, this event offers a valuable opportunity to learn, connect, and contribute to creating more compassionate, inclusive, and trauma-informed communities.

Together, we can help refugee children heal, thrive, and realise their full potential.
