About this Event

The Jenkins Project presents an updated training, ‘Reflective Practice When Engaging With Those That Use Harm,’ focused on the role of community-based perpetrator services in addressing domestic abuse. The program examines personal and social barriers to engaging with individuals who perpetrate abuse, explores the function of violence in intimate relationships, and outlines strategies The Jenkins Project uses to reduce its frequency and intensity. The training also introduces reflective practice techniques to support practitioner well-being. Participants will critically assess their understanding of domestic abuse through reviews, group discussions, collaborative activities, and video materials.

This training is intended for professionals who may have contact with individuals who cause harm but is open to all interested practitioners within LLR.

Training Objectives:

  • Identify and address personal barriers that may hinder effective engagement with individuals who perpetrate abuse.
  • Refine practitioner beliefs and roles within the context of domestic abuse.
  • Reflect on the personal impact and potential changes that exposure to trauma may have on practitioners’ daily lives.
  • Examine foundational beliefs and how these influence professional practice when supporting both perpetrators and victims, including consideration of the beliefs held by abusers.
  • Analyse the function of violence and its role within the context of domestic abuse, as well as its broader effects.
  • Consider the practitioner’s position within the personal, social, and cultural frameworks that shape understandings of domestic abuse.
  • Develop effective responses to perpetrators that prioritise victim and child safety, informed by the domestic homicide timeline.
  • Expand knowledge of risk factors in domestic violence and develop appropriate questioning techniques to engage perpetrators.
  • Understand the mechanisms by which perpetrators use power and control in abusive relationships and how these dynamics are maintained.

The training will be delivered by The Jenkins Project Intervention Team, who possess extensive experience working directly with individuals who use violence in intimate relationships.
