About this Event
Reenactment of the Battle of the Cowpens
A fundraiser for Fort Wayne's The Old Fort, this is a day filled with history, revolutionary war soldiers, gunfire, and cannons; highlighting one of the greatest victories of the Revolutionary War - the Battle of the Cowpens. This day is a celebration and the perfect way to commemorate our nation's 250th anniversary. Please note that entrance is with advance tickets only and the number of tickets are limited.
This is an afternoon long event on Joseph Decuis Farm, with events, lectures and demonstrations; period exhibitors, and food inspired by the era. The day culiminates with the narrated Revolutionary War battle reenactment which took place on January 19, 1781 at the Cowpens in South Carolina, (a pasturing area for cows on their way to market.) The British had been winning the war up until that point and this decisive victory led by Patriot General Daniel Morgan against the British Commander Banastre Tarleton, turned the tide for the colonists and led to their eventual victory.
The program will start with a video from the Cowpens National Battlefield which gives a storied explanation of the battle, how it evolved and how the Patriots were able to turn the tide against the British and win the battle. There are also demonstrations of musket loading/firing, artillery demonstrations, blacksmith presentations and a visit from Paul Revere. The reenactors will be set up around the farm. Chat with them about their guns, their uniforms, what they eat and how they fight. A family friendly event, there is also an opportunity for the kids to learn to march while they carry wooden muskets, and try-out Colonial era toys.
A barbecue dinner featuring Revolutionary War foods will be served following the reenactment. The menu will be posted when it becomes available.
This is a fundraiser for Old Fort Wayne, an historic reproduction of the garrison built in 1815 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Its mission is to educate the community and its visitors about the history of our area and its early development, including the important significance to the growth of the Old Northwest Territory and the state of Indiana. The Old Fort is open to the public free of charge and is proudly run 100% by volunteers. They have recently launched a much needed restoration project to help keep the fort in good working order and we want to help! They rely greatly on individual donations. Interestingly, being located a quarter of a mile from the original location of the 1815 fort, this seemingly minor detail makes the fort ineligible for funding from historic foundations. Who knew!? We didn't. Come help the cause!
They have some cool events coming up and they always love visitors. Here's a link to their website.
Please note that in the case of inclement weather every effort will be made to continue with the event, but if it is cancelled there will be no refunds and the proceeds will go to Old Fort Wayne.
