Explores the passionate world of rare soul record collectors who devote their lives to finding, preserving, and sharing forgotten music. More than a film about collecting, it is astory of cultural preservation, community, and obsession, following a small group of collectors as they rescue neglected recordings by Black and Chicano soul artists and transform forgotten songs into living history—from California to the world.
Why I Love You: Meet The Ultimates
In the heart of 1970s West Philadelphia, childhood friends came together under the mentorship of the visionary Evetta Valentine to form The Ultimates. United by their shared love of music, they recorded a ballad called “Why I Love You”—a track deeply in tune with the sound of its time. Decades later and nearly 3,000 miles from its birthplace, “Why I Love You” was resurrected by an unexpected community: the California Chicano lowrider scene. Embraced for its lush instrumentation and heartfelt vocals, the song became a cultural gem, passed down through generations of car clubs and music collectors. In giving the song new life, they gave The Ultimates a long-overdue second chance.

From the soul recordings of George Kerr with artists like Linda Jones and The Escorts, to his work with Sylvia and Joe Robinson at All Platinum Records—a label that would rise, fall, and ulitmately give way to Sugar Hill Records, where hip hop was born.
Captured through personal storytelling and a rare tribute moment, the film reveals how soul didn't just influence culture—it built it!

With Chicano Soul Fest taking place at History Park in San Jose on August 29th, 2026, just two weeks after this special screening; this will give all event attendees the opportunity to learn the stories of some of the performing artists and our special honoree of the Chicano Soul Fest tribute, before meeting them in person! Stories create connection and music brings people together—a perfect pair for a heartfelt experience!
