Inspired by the cratediggers of the vinyl world, Maslow's x ReelDiggers Film Club choices aren't necessarily your canonical, "important" movies every film buff should know - rather, more of a pick'n'mix of rare finds, acclaimed directors' deep cuts/ underrated gems, and some lesser-known classics.

This month's film: Buena Vista Social Club.

The greatest Cuban band the world had never heard.

Buena Vista Social Club is a 1999 documentary film directed by Wim Wenders about the music of Cuba, featuring the musicians who recorded the 1997 album Buena Vista Social Club.

It's a music documentary with an irresistible “found footage” quality about it, encouraging a delightful feeling of stumbling across something too good to have slipped through the net: musicians who had long been forgotten, fallen out of fashion, or never quite made it.

It’s as if the faded glamour of Old Havana had been fashioned into an all-star musical ensemble.

Buena Vista Social Club pretty much defines the spirit of ReelDiggers Film Club, and that’s why it’s our opening film. It might as well be our entire manifesto.

Whilst it’s not the kind of film you would find topping the usual “100 best movies of all time” lists, that’s exactly the point. It’s got soul. It’s got verve. And it’s got something that’s central to our whole curatorial philosophy- taste.

Most importantly, it inhabits a universe that will envelop you in cigar smoke and the bracing spray of the Malecón for a couple of hours.
