Since the turn of the nineteenth century, advances in biology, along with growing research into the remarkably complex abilities of non-human animals in fields such as ethology, psychology, and philosophy, have progressively challenged the validity of the binary division between humans and animals. While this rigid distinction is now becoming increasingly untenable, the crucial question of how to understand and address the relationship between humans and non-human animals persists. In this talk, Dr Young will explore this relationship before moving on to an analysis of Alphonso Lingis’ fascinating yet seldom discussed work on animals. This discussion will in turn set the stage for a revaluation of our ethical relation to animals.
Dr Niki Young is a lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Malta.
