About this Event

Join us in honoring Hawaiian perspectives on relationality on Saturday, July 20th, 2024 at 4pm for Redeeming Māhū: Deconstructing and Reconstructing Māhū with Hawaiian Mindfulness. The panel discussion will be moderated by Ākea Kahikina, Educator of ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i and Hana Keaka practitioner. Panelists will include Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, Cultural Leader; Kaʻiminaʻauao Kahikina, Hula Practitioner and PhD Student of Indigenous Political Science; Ala Savio, Founder of Kū Anuenue; and Kumu Kapuaokalani Ka'au'a, Kumu Hula of Hālau Hula Unuokeahi. Event will take place at EHCC’s Kahua ʻElua Theatre.

Opening Oli begins at 4pm, followed by Kanaka Maoli classical pianist and composer Laritza “Lala” Bouche, Hālau Hula Unuokeahi and Kumu Hula Kapuaokalani Ka'au'a, with the panel, Redeeming Māhū: Deconstructing and Reconstructing Māhū with Hawaiian Mindfulness and Q&A.

This event pairs with the He Ehu, He Pōhaku Exhibition, curated by Kanani Daley, to enhance community awareness for Hawai'i's Pae Māhū. Daley shares, "I don't believe there's hard facts or immutable edges to nature, to people, and dare I say, to culture. Duality and transformation, I think, are fundamental to evolution. Lāhui, and especially māhū, have the right to self determine their identities, to their own coordinates of belonging, and can define and create their culture, without colonial limitations. I wanted this exhibit and event to be about that right to freedom, and to be an access point for greater knowledge on belonging. These individuals are beacons to their communities, and I wanted them to elevate the meanings of freedom and belonging for māhū from a cultural and mindful perspective."
