Demonstration Game:
Williamite War in Ireland (1689-1691) - Demonstration Game
This game will be a meeting engagement between forces using the Black Powder rule set. It's a simple ruleset focusing on the fun of the period (see below). No knowledge of the period or the rules is required to play this game.
All the figures and terrain are supplied, so if you are at a lost end of the day, feel free to join in. Flick us a note if you are keen.
Background:
The war in Ireland followed the glorious revolutions in England. A mainly catholic Ireland was used as a base of operations by the deposed James II to launch a counter-revolution against the forces of Williamite England. The war also dragged in the Dutch and the French. While eventually, this was a Williamite (protestant) victory the consequences of this uprising are still felt in Ireland today.
The period is the transition from the pike and shot period to the general adoption of the bayonet.
The 'Irish' forces (although Irish fought on both sides) were weaker in infantry and artillery, they had some excellent cavalry draws from the landed gentry. They were supported by elements of French infantry - arguably the best infantry in Europe at the time.
The 'English' had more numerous and better-equipped infantry, and artillery and were backed by Dutch troops - arguably the 'other' best infantry in Europe and bitter opponents of the absolutism of the Sun King's France.
