If you work within the Legal Community or know someone who does, you are invited. Mass is at 6pm in the Cathedral with a reception to follow in the Cathedral Center.
The first recorded Red Mass, calling on the guidance
of the Holy Spirit in judicial and legislative matters,
was celebrated in Paris in 1245 to inaugurate the
judicial year, and was celebrated annually thereafter.
In England the tradition of the Red Mass began
about 1310 and was celebrated for the opening of
Michaelmas term.
The United States has celebrated the Red Mass
since 1877 to mark the opening session of the US
Supreme Court. Now, many cities celebrate each year,
including Washington, D.C., where members of the
Supreme Court, the President, and members of
Congress often attend the Red Mass at the National
Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. In the United
States jurists of persuasions join together at the Red
Mass to seek guidance in their work toward justice.
