Are you a post-secondary Indigenous student looking to explore Indigenous sky knowledge?
This workshop is perfect for you! H.R.MacMillan Space Centre, in partnership with Dr. Shandin Pete, presents the first workshop in a series: Reclaiming Sky Stories, where you can learn more about the significance of Indigenous sky knowledge through storytelling, oral traditions, and Dr. Shandin Pete’s research and teachings.
Combining presentation, dialogue, and reflection, the workshop invites participants to consider Indigenous relationships with the night sky, their continuing relevance today, and their connections to astronomy and contemporary space science.

Who can register?
Indigenous post-secondary students enrolled at a recognized Canadian institution are eligible. Indigenous students from all fields are welcome, particularly those interested in space, science, technology, education, policy, arts and culture, and related fields.
About Dr. Shandin Pete:
Dr. Shandin Pete (Salish/Diné) is an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia. Raised in Arlee, Montana USA on the Flathead Indian Reservation, he is a hydrogeologist, geoscientific ethnographer, and science educator whose work focuses on Indigenous astronomy, oral histories, Indigenous research methodologies, and Salish approaches to science and knowledge production. His teaching and research explore how story, place, observation, and lived experience shape understandings of the natural world.
For Reclaiming Sky Stories, he brings together longstanding work with Indigenous knowledge, astronomy education, and culturally grounded approaches to science learning.
