Reclaiming Kitchen Wisdom: Seasonal Canning Workshop
About this Event
Reclaiming Kitchen Wisdom is a hands-on workshop series created to help us recover those practical skills, build confidence in the kitchen, and reconnect with the knowledge that has sustained families and communities for generations.
In this beginner-friendly seasonal canning workshop, we will preserve what is abundant and ready at the farm. Depending on the September harvest, we may prepare pickled peppers, canned tomatoes, or another approved seasonal tomato or pepper recipe. The final recipe will be announced approximately one week before class.
Rather than forcing the harvest to fit a predetermined menu, we will allow the season to guide us—because preserving begins by paying attention to what the land is providing.
During this three-hour workshop, participants will learn:
- The difference between water-bath canning and pressure canning
- Which foods can be safely processed in a boiling-water canner
- How to access safe research-tested preservation recipes
- How acidity, temperature, processing time and elevation affect food safety
- How to prepare jars, lids, ingredients and equipment
- How to fill jars, remove air bubbles and measure headspace
- How to process jars safely
- How to cool, test, label and store home-canned food
- Common canning mistakes and how to avoid them
- How seasonal preservation can reduce waste and extend the harvest
Each participant will leave with:
- One jar of preserved goods
- Hands-on experience
- Printed recipes and preservation guides
- The confidence to continue preserving food at home
All ingredients and equipment will be provided.
This class is ideal for:

This class is planned as an outdoor urban farm workshop so we can gather close to the source of our food if available. If the forecast calls for excessive heat or unsafe weather, registered participants will be notified and the workshop will move inside to our nearby studio.
This is a community-supported workshop offered on a sliding scale. All ticket levels provide the same experience—please choose the rate that best reflects your current financial capacity.
No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Come ready to learn, ask questions and reclaim a skill that belongs in our kitchens.
