Reclaimed Memory: Transforming Difficult Materials into New Form
About this Event
Some objects become difficult because of what happened around them. They may carry memories of endings, mistakes, abandoned plans, disappointment, grief, or versions of ourselves we have outgrown.
In Reclaimed Memory, participants may bring a non-precious object, failed artwork, damaged textile, discarded letter, broken household item, or another fragment they feel ready to transform. Reclaimed materials will also be available for anyone who prefers not to work with a personal object.
Through wrapping, binding, cutting, painting, stitching, joining, collage, and visible repair, participants will create something new without pretending the material’s original history never existed.
The goal is not to erase the past or force a positive interpretation. Instead, the workshop creates space for materials to change form while still carrying evidence of what came before.
This is a creative reflection workshop, not therapy. Participants are never required to share the story behind their object or disclose personal experiences.
Participants will explore
- Visible repair and creative reconstruction
- Material transformation
- The relationship between memory and objects
- Working with contradiction, rupture, and continuation
- Creating without erasing previous histories
Participants will leave with
- One repaired or transformed object
- A personal material-reflection practice
- New approaches to repair, continuation, and creative change
Primary materials are included. Participants may optionally bring one non-precious object or fragment to transform.
