Rebuttals on the Rocks: An Exhibition Debate Happy Hour

A vibey happy hour mixed with debate – sounds impossible, right?

Join us at Shanklin Hall in June for an exhibition debate with a twist. Watch young Black professionals trained in competitive debate tackle fun, spicy topics: Should we boycott art from problematic creators? Should we welcome or regret hookup culture? Leave work at the door – this is structured debate about things actually worth arguing about.

Even if you aren't debating, you can participate while enjoying Shanklin's happy hour. Afterward, vibe out to a live set from DJ Curt Magurt. Optional challenges and activities throughout this formally informal event.

The Format:

• 1 Motion (announced at 6:30 PM)
• 2 Teams (Pro vs. Con)
• 4 Debaters
• 5 Judges
• 15 Minutes to Prep

Teams will exchange arguments to convince you and the judges. After the round, judges submit votes and share their reasoning (1 minute each).

Where You Come In: Ask debaters questions or make points they missed before their final speeches. Vote in audience polls before and after the debate to see how opinions shift. While debaters prep, the MC will poll the crowd on the motion.

We'll give you plenty to talk about for the rest of the night. DJ Curt Magurt spins while you mingle. The perfect conversation starter meets the perfect pregame.
