About this Event
The Black Film & Theater Initiative's annual Rebellion Remembrance Festival serves as a showcase of Black art and talent by student creatives. For three nights, Black artists will connect, cultivate, and coalesce with fellow UCLA students as well as guests to present Black stories.
This inaugural event is in collaboration with UCLA's Afrikan Student Union, as well as the NAACP Beverly Hills|Hollywood Branch. In addition to our student's work, we will be screening two documentaries by independent filmmakers Maximina Juson and Millena Gay.
The first day will be a screening of student films, as well as the two documentaries at the James Bridges Theater. A Q&A will follow. The second day will be a series of live student performances, with a Q&A afterwards at the Darren Star Theater.
The third day will be a small reception, and a live podcast interview with Tina Redmond of TRACC RADIO.TV featuring special guests. After this, we will be having an honorary event for the filmmakers of the L.A. Rebellion at the Student Wellness Center/Backlot at Melnitz Hall. In attendance will be Khadijah Fanaka, filmmaker and granddaughter of acclaimed filmmaker and member of the L.A. Rebellion, Jamaa Fanaka.
UCLA’s historically significant L.A. Rebellion started as an initiative to bring more cultural diversity to the college in the 1960s. This action would evolve, and produce a number of culturally legendary filmmakers, including Julie Dash, Charles Burnett, Haile Gerima, and Jamaa Fanaka. This event is dedicated to these Black creatives who paved the way for future generations.
RSVP does not guarantee entree. Spots are first come, first serve.
