Join us for RBC's May event as we explore this month's theme, Speaking Out, via Gisèle Pelicot's book, A Hymn to Life.About this Event
More about the book:
In November 2020, Gisèle Pelicot was called to a police station and life as she knew it ended. Her husband of fifty years had been secretly drugging and raping her, and inviting dozens of strangers into their home to abuse her, for nearly a decade. When the trial began in Avignon four years later, Gisèle made a choice that stunned the world: she waived her right to anonymity, insisting the proceedings be held in public. "Shame must change sides," she declared. Part memoir, part act of defiance, this is the story she tells for the first time in her own words — not as a victim, but as a witness to her own life.
Why we chose it: "A rousing feminist manifesto… it seeks a proper transfer of shame from sex-crime victims to their perpetrators, and the perpetrators' enablers."
Delicious drinks are included, as well as engaging storytelling and space for conversations and sharing your own journeys across countries and continents.

Your host for the evening
Omar Latif
Omar is the founder of an AI startup and also pursuing a PhD in Behavioural AI. One big reason Omar joined RBC is to get away from academic literature, gain knowledge in areas outside of his interests and to have engaging conversations with the awesome community.
There is a clear alliance with the philosophy and taste of RBC as Omar has already read 70% of the books from the Rebel Book Club library!
Ryan Fellows
Co-host Ryan is an Honorary Salfordian having lived here for 14 years, but proudly born and raised in Preston
Having discovered RBC during ‘lockdown’ the monthly variety was a welcome distraction and the old zoom meets’ helped keep his sanity! Post Covid he’s looking to help build the Manchester crew
A keen amateur historian and lover of most sports; when not delving into a new book he’ll be watching the weekend's football or out running (in the famous Manchester rain!).
