Join us for RBC's August event as we explore this month's theme, Modern Love, via Paul Eastwick's book, Bonded by Evolution.
About this Event

About the book:

We're told men and women want different things from love: he wants novelty, she wants commitment, he's chasing looks, she's chasing status. Psychology professor Paul Eastwick says this popular "evolutionary" story is unscientific, and sometimes dangerous. Drawing on original research from his own lab, he reveals a more hopeful truth: attraction isn't about hierarchies of 10s and 2s, it's about finding, and often building, real compatibility.

Why we chose it: "Rarely have scientific rigour and exuberant optimism been such congenial companions." - Eric Klinenberg, co-author of Modern Romance

Your host for the evening: Jen Kaarlo Mendenhall

Writer, cultural storyteller, and longtime Rebel Book Club member, Jen explores ideas through the lenses of solo travel, reinvention after 40, and modern dating. Having lived in New York, London, and now Denver, she is passionate about creating welcoming spaces where curious minds connect over delicious books, discover new perspectives, and engage in conversations that linger long after the final page.

Biggest RBC impact: "One Rebel Book Club evening that has stayed with me all these years was a conversation with award-winning journalist Isobel Yeung, then at VICE, around In Extremis: The Life of War Correspondent Marie Colvin. I was admittedly a little starstruck, but even more moved by how she used her voice to bring important stories to light, stories that truly deserved to be seen. The room was filled with curious minds, giving the discussion an electric energy that perfectly captured what Rebel Book Club does so well: bringing thoughtful people together to listen, reflect, and see the world a little differently."
