LAND ART: Reading Landscapes and Navigating Tarot Weather Through the Works of Ecological Visual Poets
In the PRS Library!
In the Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot, the landscape is never incidental. Weather, light and atmosphere continuously shape the scene: skies darken or clear, mountains block or elevate, gardens grow through dedicated labor while open land exposes nature’s formal creative genius. These elements are no backdrop—they actively participate in meaning-making. A reading, in this sense, is not only symbolic but environmental: it asks where you stand, to be immersed in the land and sky and sense how deeply you allow yourself to be immersed within it.
In the 20th century, the emergence of land art brought forth a similar sensibility. Artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, Ana Mendieta, Robert Smithson, Agnes Denes, and Nancy Holt approached landscape not as scenery, but as ensouled material and creative collaborator. Their works—melting, eroding, dissolving—were morphed by time, weather and ecological forces.
This exercised-based class explores what we can learn practically about Tarot from these artists and their incredible practices. Rather than reading cards as isolated symbols, we will approach them as environments in flux. Seasonal change becomes narrative, landscape shapeshifting both in structures and colors, while the reader blends into an active inhabitant within the field of meaning. Divination, in this light, emerges as a form of ecological awareness—an art of perceiving and working with the conditions that sculpt both inner and outer worlds.

For the 2026 Los Angeles Festival of Tarot, we invited presenters to explore Tarot as an ecosystem—a network of interrelated symbols, environments, structures, traditions and imaginal worlds.
Ecosystems may be natural or constructed, terrestrial or cosmic, physical or symbolic. Terrain, architecture, weather, oceans, galaxies, communities, and cultural systems are all lenses through which to approach the cards.
