Reading Group: 'The Christening'
About this Event
This reading group will consider D. H. Lawrence's 'The Christening', a fascinating early short story set in Eastwood, in which the daughter of a retired miner has brought shame on her family by having a child outside marriage. Lawrence reverses traditional moral norms by presenting passion and the daughter's physical affection for her child as vital, in contrast to the distorting patriarchal perspectives of her father and the clergyman who comes in secret to the family's home in order to baptise it.
Attendees have the option to visit the museum before the event starts.
