Reading Between the Lines: Decoding Communication as an Expat

🌍 Lost in translation… even when we're speaking the same language! 😄
Having lived in five countries and spoken several languages along the way, I've collected my fair share of cultural misunderstandings.
Like discovering that a French-speaking Québécois doesn't necessarily communicate like someone from France. Or that what French people consider direct and honest can sound aggressive to Belgian colleagues, while what Belgians consider diplomatic can leave the French wondering what they really mean.
And don't even get me started on the British art of queuing! 🇬🇧
My fascination with cultural differences goes all the way back to my Erasmus years and my cross-cultural management classes with Pete Stone at NEOMA. And despite years of studying, working and living across cultures, I still occasionally get it wrong.
Which is why I'm so excited to be hosting an interactive conference with my friend and fellow coach Fabienne Guichon!
🎤 **Reading Between the Lines: Decoding Communication as an Expat**
We'll explore all those unwritten communication rules that can make life abroad fascinating, funny and occasionally frustrating.
Inspired by Erin Meyer's *The Culture Map* and Geert Hofstede's work, we'll talk about communication styles, cultural assumptions and those moments when you suddenly realise that what you heard wasn't necessarily what the other person meant.
And we'd love to hear your stories too!
📅 Friday 27 November, 18:30–19:30
📍 Brussels — InterNations Brussels Professional Networking Group

**Not an InterNations member? You're very welcome too!**
Come along for some insights, shared experiences and, I'm sure, a few laughs. 😊
