Director's notes from Frank Ward:
I think it is a safe bet that most people can say they have heard of the tragic story of the sinking of the British luxury liner RMS Titanic. However, knowing the year in which this happened may not be so familiar. The year was 1912. Perhaps not as familiar but no less significant, was an event that also happened that year. A race to the South Pole between two rival countries - Great Britain and Norway.
After reading this play, I was struck by the depth of character each actor’s role contributes to telling this story. I have often said that each role has the opportunity to be the actor’s defining role. I am excited to be bringing this play to life for the Theatre West community at this staged reading with such a very talented cast and crew. And my hope and desire is to have it performed in a full production here sometime in the not too distant future.

Summary of the tale from the publisher:
Drawn from the journals and letters found on the frozen body of Captain Scott, the action of the play blends scenes of the explorer and his men at various stages of their ordeal, with flashbacks of Scott and his young wife and with fateful glimpses of his Norwegian rival, Roald Amundsen, whose party beat him to the South Pole.
Refusing the use of sled dogs as unsporting, Scott and his team struggle to drag their heavy gear across a frozen wasteland, only to find that Amundsen has preceded them to their goal. The play is also a study of British pride and upper-class resolve - Scott’s aristocratic sense of destiny and command and his young bride’s ability to understand her husband’s drive while failing to accept his motivations.
But it is in the tragic trip back, as the members of the expedition die one by one, that the play reaches its dramatic apogee, capturing with chilling intensity the awesome bravery of men who must accept the bitter knowledge that suffering and death will be the only reward for their heroism.
The accomplished cast and crew consists of:
Jason Kutchma as Scott (aka Con, Robert)
T. Sean Prescott as Amundsen
Mary Griffith as Kathleen (aka Kath)
Keith Hutchinson as Bowers (Birdie)
Lewis Smith as Wilson (aka Bill)
Patrick Kiernan as Oates (aka Titus)
Scott Christianson as Evans (aka Edgar, Eddie, Taft, Taffy)
Assistant Director — Bonnie Ross
Lights/Sound — Dan Pack
