Le théâtre des pauvres bêtes and Cité des Arts present together this special Louisiana French language Reader’s Theatre production. La Table des veuves and Jean L’ours et la fille du roi represent two early comedic stage productions of the theatre troupe, Nous Autres, which became known as Le Théâtre Cadien.
The Cité des Arts Reader’s Theatre series presents interpretive reading of classic plays where actors bring to life the characters and stories while reading from a script without memorization, costumes, sets, or props.
La Table des veuves, a collaborative creation by the members of the theatre troupe, follows a group of friends on a Saturday night at a South Louisiana dance hall. In this classic comedy, we meet a trio of widows who gather to exchange local news, gossip about their old love stories, and cast glances at eligible men, while offering their sharp opinions on a newly widowed woman experiencing her first night out.
Jean L’ours et la fille du roi is an adaptation by Barry Ancelet and Richard Guidry of a traditional Louisiana folktale told by Elby Deshotels, a native of Mamou. The humorous tale features a poor yet cunning and bold boy who uses his wits to accomplish impossible tasks and win the hand of the king's daughter, along with a large part of the kingdom.
Directed by Kirby Jambon, founder of Le théâtre des pauvres bêtes, this special Reader’s Theatre presentation features a cast of French-speakers from various backgrounds who have come together in this celebration of French language theatre in Louisiana. Reading in La Table des veuves are Chris Hayes, Brenda Mounier, Camille Harrington, Martin Arceneaux, Moussa Sadou, Indalou Cloe, and John Ashburn. Reading in Jean L’ours et la fille du roi are Martin Arceneaux, John Ashburn, June Gautreau, Marie Ducote, Nathan Rabalais, Amanda LaFleur, Camille Harrington, Moussa Sadou, Indalou Cloe, and Chris Hayes.
