R.E.A.D. to the Dogs at R.F. Meador Branch Library in Willis, TX, encourages children to practice their reading skills by reading to specially trained therapy dogs. Children who read ten books to a dog receive a free book. This activity is provided through a partnership with Pets with a Mission. Registration is required and opens one week before the program.
This program is intended for children who can read independently or with minimal help. Children not yet reading are invited to enjoy books in the library with their caregivers.
PLEASE REGISTER ONLY CHILDREN WHO WILL BE READING. Parents and non-readers do not need to register.
To ensure an enjoyable experience for the children and the dogs, the following rules will be observed:
Read to the Dogs is intended to be a one-on-one reading experience between the child and the dog. Parents and siblings of readers are asked to sit in the designated area or wait outside the room. Parents or siblings who are distracting, either because they are making too much noise or interfering with the reading session in some way, may be asked to leave.
Children may sit with a dog for up to 10 minutes and read as many books to the dog as possible before their turn ends. They can read to a dog for another 10 minutes, but they must wait their turn again.
Children waiting for their first turn to read will be moved to the front of the line.
Children may read a book from the library or bring one from home.
Upon arrival, children sign in at the Children's Desk to join the program line.
