Join Nottingham Black Archive for Read a Black Author 2026, an inspiring afternoon celebrating Black poets, shared reading, and Nottingham's literary history.

This year's theme, "Pick a Poet," pays tribute to Oswald George Powe, author of one of the earliest pamphlets on race and class in Nottingham and a dedicated advocate for Black poets in the city. Together, we'll celebrate an important part of Nottingham's print heritage while exploring the lasting impact of his work and the voices of Black poets past and present on what would have been George's 100th birthday.

Whether you're revisiting a favourite poet or discovering someone new, this event is an opportunity to celebrate Black literature, connect with fellow readers, and honour Nottingham's rich cultural and literary heritage.

Please bring a book or collection by a Black poet if you can. A small selection of books will also be available to browse on the day.

Info: • Meet at Central Library from 1:45pm for registration.
• At 2:00pm, we'll begin with 20 minutes of quiet reading outside the library (weather permitting).
• We'll then head inside the library to share extracts from books by Black poets and enjoy readings, discussion, and conversation in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere
