High Glanau Manor is an important Arts and Crafts house set in 12 acres of gardens designed in 1922 by H. Avray Tipping. Tipping was the Architectural Editor of Country Life magazine from 1907 until his death in 1933. Original features, once lost, have been lovingly restored by the current owners, including an Edwardian glasshouse and large pergola. What was a rustic stone tank set into the wall with steps leading to a swimming pool, surrounded by concrete and lampposts, are now 100 ft long double herbaceous borders. These contrast with groves of rhododendrons and azaleas sweeping down over the steep stone path which leads down to the stream garden with it's fernery, and primula beds along the waterside. There are far reaching views over the Vale of Usk from impressive stone terraces.
The gardens were featured on BBC Gardener's World in July 2014. The full article can be seen here https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p021r6f9
Helena Gerrish's book, 'Mounton House: The Birth and Rebirth of an Edwardian Country Home' is now published and available at all good book retailers.
