Join us for a special Q&A screening with Director: Julia Sartorio + Writer: Miriama Kamo.
Antarctica in winter is one of the harshest places on Earth and one of the least seen. Not a destination, but an environment experienced by only a handful of people.
"RANGINUI: Call of the Ice" follows Māori astronomer Rangi Matamua and language expert Mataia Keepa as they journey into this frozen world at its most extreme season; where temperatures drop to -50°C, darkness takes over, and uncertainty defines every moment.
Rangi carries a personal promise to honour his grandfather’s dying wish and share Māori starlore beyond Aotearoa. In Antarctica, that knowledge is placed inside one of the most extreme environments on Earth, seen through a Māori lens alongside scientific observation in real time.
With no certainty of what can be captured, the film unfolds under untested conditions.
As they move through a landscape in constant motion; auroras, constellations, shifting ice, sudden storms; they begin to read Antarctica differently. Not as something to observe, but something that reveals itself.
"RANGINUI: Call of the Ice" is a rare cinematic documentary of Antarctica in the winter; where science and Indigenous knowledge meet, and understanding comes from learning how to read what few ever get the chance to see.
COME EARLY! Doors 5:30pm, pre-show 6pm - Q&A commences directly after the film at around 7:45pm for 30 mins with Director: Julia Sartorio + Writer: Miriama Kamo
