Raising Black Voices: Suicide and Mental Health Townhall

Come join us for an important discussion on mental health and suicide in the Black and African American community. Sadly, we are seeing an increase in suicide attempts and deaths within the African American community, especially in our children. Over the past five years Muskegon county has seen a dramatic increase. The Congressional Black Caucus sounded the alarm in the winter of 2019. COVID, racial unrest, and economic hardship has only added to the problem.

Our townhall discussion will include current suicide data and trends, contributing factors and possible interventions, misconceptions regarding mental health in black communities, impact of intergenerational trauma, local suicide prevention efforts, actionable ways for individuals to get involved in being part of positive change in their respective communities.

Let's come together to share experiences, resources, and support each other!

This free event will be held at the Muskegon GVSU Innovation Hub. Lunch will be provided.

This event is appropriate for social workers, public health, educators, parents, clergy, first responders, politicians, business community/HR, etc. Any interested community members from Muskegon county, etc.
