Discover how rain gardens support salmon, reduce runoff, and build climate resilience at this inspiring community presentation.
About this Event

Rain gardens are beautiful, practical landscape features designed to capture and absorb rainwater where it falls, helping to reduce stormwater runoff, filter pollutants, support biodiversity, and protect local waterways and salmon habitat. As communities across the region face the growing impacts of climate change, rain gardens are becoming an increasingly important tool for building healthier, more resilient neighbourhoods.

Join the West Vancouver Streamkeepers on June 2 for an inspiring evening exploring the vital role rain gardens can play in our communities. While the evening will include the Society’s Annual General Meeting (shortened), the main focus of the event will be a special presentation by rain garden educator and advocate Deborah Jones.

Through engaging stories, practical examples, and accessible information, Deborah will explain exactly what rain gardens are, how they work, and the many benefits they provide for both people and the environment. Audience members will learn how rain gardens help slow and naturally filter rainwater, reduce pressure on storm sewer systems, improve water quality, and create healthier habitat for salmon and other wildlife.

The presentation will also explore how rain gardens can be implemented at many different scales, from quick and simple home projects to larger, more ambitious community and civic initiatives. Whether you are a homeowner curious about creating your own garden, a volunteer passionate about local streams, or a municipal planner interested in sustainable infrastructure solutions, this event will offer valuable ideas and inspiration.

This evening is an opportunity to connect with others who care about climate resilience, healthy waterways, and the future of our shared environment. All are welcome.

About the Presenter:
Deborah Jones has a BA in Urban Studies and a Master of Library Science, and worked for the Vancouver Public Library for more than 30 years. She and her husband, Ib Nielsen, joined Cougar Creek Streamkeepers in 2004 after noticing illegal tree-cutting along the banks of Cougar Creek, the most productive salmon stream in North Delta. One project quickly led to another, sparking years of environmental stewardship and community engagement.

Today, Deb serves as volunteer Rain Gardens Coordinator for Cougar Creek Streamkeepers, overseeing the maintenance of more than 30 school and community rain gardens created since 2006 in partnership with the City of Delta, Delta School District, Pacific Salmon Foundation, Nature Trust of BC, and others. She also advises the Nature Trust of BC on its rain garden grant program.

Location & Parking:

Registrants will be emailed a reminder 2 days before the event. This email will include detailed parking information in addition to a map outlining the path leading to the Kawanis Great Hall from the parking area.
