Hello all! I am super excited about the next Railway show, which will take place on Sunday, September 14th at 4pm with Garnet Rogers! Railway has hosted Garnet in our previous iterations, and it's always a wonderful show, with lots of stories (and maybe some tall tales), a bevy of guitars all with different sounds, and his rich baritone voice.
Garnet's musical interest started as a kid when he taught himself ukulele, flute, guitar and violin. Soon after high school, he joined his brother Stan on the road, and for a decade along with a friend, they performed as a trio, earning the highest accolades in folk music. After Stan's tragic death in an airplane fire in 1983, Garnet continued to make music and has kept his brother's spirit alive.
He has established himself as ‘One of the major talents of our time”. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”, Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence – close to six and a half feet tall – with a voice to match. With his “smooth, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range, and thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again.

Garnet says this "might be one of my last trips to the US (because after 50 years on the road there comes a time to take a rest)." He reached out to me to request a repeat appearance at our series after seeing the venue online, and I think hosting him for Railway Concerts at Studio 9 is a most beautiful way to bookend half a century of wonderful music.
