The Raetihi Gutbuster is a signature cycling and running event in the heart of the Ruapehu District, blending iconic road challenges, stunning scenery, and true small-town hospitality. With multiple event options, it’s designed for everyone — from serious endurance athletes to families and first-timers.

Choose your challenge:

• Raetihi 88 – an unforgettable 88km river-to-mountain road adventure. Riders are shuttled to the Whanganui River Road for a spectacular start beside the awa, before climbing through dramatic papa cliffs, remote valleys, and historic landscapes. The route returns to Raetihi via the Waipuna Cycleway, with 1,698m of total ascent.
• For fit, confident riders. Shuttle-supported. No private support vehicles.

• Gutbuster 52km Road Ride – the original classic from Raetihi to Pipiriki and back. A tough but rewarding out-and-back ride with long climbs, fast descents, and incredible river views, featuring 987m of cumulative climbing.

• 20km Valley Spin – a scenic, social ride ideal for families, e-bikes, and riders wanting to soak up the landscape without the big climbs.

• Waipuna Challenge Half Marathon (21km) – a challenging and satisfying road run through rural Ruapehu, perfect for runners looking for something a little different.

• 5km Raetihi Ramble Community Fun Run – family-friendly, fun, and inclusive, with optional dress-ups, team entries, and prizes for creativity.
